Deep breathing must be a central aspect of any longevity program. Qi, the life energy that animates our bodies and minds, is generated to a very large extent by the lungs. Arachidonic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) is released from cell membranes upon stimulation and converted to prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Leukotrienes induce allergic hyper-reactivity. Perilla seed extract (very rich in a-linolenic acid, an important omega-3 fatty acid) inhibits the production of leukotrienes. Human studies have shown that serum IgE levels are suppressed by administration of Perilla Seed Extract, and allergic rhinitis and hay fever were significantly improved in humans. These studies were considered preliminary, but they are illustrative.*
